  • What is epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO)?
  • Among them, epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO), a bio-based, low-cost, and non-toxic oil with high thermal and oxidative stability and high content of reactive oxirane rings, has opened a wide range of possibilities for various applications (Chua et al. 2012; Frias et al. 2021 ).
  • Is Esbo safe?
  • Thus, safety concerns should not be overlooked in the use of ESBO, even though it is considered to be safer than other plasticizers. Considering that the resulting ESBO migra-tion levels were close to the SML, ESBO migration from food packaging PVC/PVDC wrap products should be regularly monitored.
  • What is Esbo used for?
  • Moreover, ESBO is already produced on an industrial scale and used in various applications, such as lubricant formulations (Adhvaryu and Erhan 2002 ), coatings (Yang et al. 2022 ), and plasticizers (Yang et al. 2014) for synthetic polymeric materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (Bueno-Ferrer et al. 2010 ).
  • Does Esbo migrate from PVC/PVDC cling film?
  • The aim of this study was to investigate the migration of ESBO from PVC/PVDC cling film, based on gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The specific migration of ESBO was evaluated using various food simulants (water, 4% acetic acid, 50% ethanol and n-heptane) for PVC and PVDC wrap products.
  • Is Esbo a food additive?
  • In particular, ESBO is indicated as an additive in most of the commercial PVC wrap that is currently marketed. The most important EU regulations which concern plastics for food contact are the following: EU Commission Directive 1935/2004, 2023/2006/EC, and 10/2011/UE (modified by EU Regulation 1282/2011).
  • Can Esbo be released from PVC/PVDC wrap into oily food?
  • These results demonstrated that ESBO could be released from PVC/ PVDC wrap into oily food. Therefore, ESBO-contained PVC/ PVDC wrap should be used with caution, particularly in direct contact with heated high-fat food. In addition, regular moni-toring of ESBO migration from PVC/PVDC wrap products should be necessary to ensure food safety.
